Tomorrow, the California State Board of Food and Agriculture is scheduled to meet to address high-speed rail and its impact on the agricultural industry.

The meeting will provide the agricultural community an opportunity to offer comments, listen to presentations by various stakeholders, and better understand the opportunities and challenges facing high-speed rail in the Central Valley. Many farmers in the region have opposed the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s (CHSRA) proposed Central Valley route, a portion of which would cut through farmland.

“Any upgrade to our aging infrastructure will have some controversy,” said California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Secretary Karen Ross in a prepared statement. “We owe it to our state’s future to carefully evaluate high-speed rail and figure out how to make it work for California.”

CHSRA Vice Chairman Tom Richards is among the meeting’s scheduled speakers.

The CDFA board advises the governor and CDFA secretary on agricultural issues and consumer needs. The board conducts forums bringing together local, state and federal government officials, agricultural representatives and citizens to discuss current issues of concern to the state’s agriculture.
