The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) announced this week crews have completed the Cedar Viaduct in Fresno.
The 3,700-foot viaduct will enable trains traveling at 200-plus mph to pass over State Route 99 and Cedar and North avenues, CHSRA officials said in a press release. Each arch spans 179 feet and is nearly 40 feet tall.
The viaduct is part of the first construction package for the 32-mile stretch of high-speed rail being built between Avenue 19 in Madera County and East American Avenue in Fresno County.
"The Cedar Viaduct is one of our largest and most visible structures across the [high-speed rail] alignment and one of the significant achievements to date on the program," said CHSRA Central Valley Regional Director Garth Fernandez.
CHSRA also has begun work to extend the 119 miles of track under construction to 171 miles of future electrified high-speed rail from Merced to Bakersfield. So far, the authority has received environmental approval for 422 miles of the high-speed rail program.
