China plans to bid for contracts to build U.S. high-speed rail lines and is stepping up exports of rail technology to Europe and Latin America, according to an Associated Press story published March 13.
“We are organizing relevant companies to participate in bidding for U.S. high-speed railways,” said Deputy Railways Minister Wang Zhiguo in a news conference.
Chinese companies already are building high-speed lines in Turkey and Venezuela. Chinese rail authorities have signed cooperation memorandums with California and Russia, and state companies plan to bid on a Brazil line linking Rio de Janeiro with Sao Paulo.
China currently operates a 4,000 mile high-speed rail network. Beijing plans to build a $300 billion, 16,000-mile network by 2020.
