Cisalpino — a joint venture between Italian railway Trenitalia and the Swiss Federal Railways — recently awarded a $365 million contract to ALSTOM Transport to provide 14 PENDOLINO trainsets.

Reaching top speeds of 155 mph and providing capacity for 430 passengers, the seven-car trainsets will be added to Cisalpino’s existing fleet, which has been in service since 1996 between Switzerland, Italy and Germany.

Designed with a tilting system, the PENDOLINO train can travel around curves at a 35 percent higher speed than conventional trains, according to a prepared statement.

The trains will be built at ALSTOM’s Savigliano, Italy, plant. Delivery is expected to begin in May 2007 and be complete in January 2008.
