The first of four Allegro high-speed trains that will operate between Helsinki, Finland, and St. Petersburg, Russia, are en route to Finland, Alstom announced today.

Alstom is building the trains under a contract awarded two years ago by Oy Karelian Trains Ltd., a joint venture between Russian Railways and Finnish Railways. Featuring tilt technology, the trains will travel speeds up to 136 mph on existing conventional rail lines. They will link Helsinki and St. Petersburg in three-and-a-half hours compared with the current five-and-a-half hours.

The first of the Allegro trains is expected to arrive in Helsinki early this month. After it’s been tested in Finland, it will be sent to Russia for testing. The other three trains will be delivered later this year.
