Florida East Coast Industries can operate All Aboard Florida trains to Orlando airport, aviation authority says

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority board recently approved a request by Florida East Coast Industries Inc. (FECI) to connect its proposed Orlando-to-Miami passenger-rail line with Orlando International Airport. FECI plans to add about 40 miles of track to the 200 miles already in place to link the privately owned All Aboard Florida service to the airport. Now, FECI and airport officials will work to develop a service agreement.

The aviation authority already has invested in infrastructure for a station that could accommodate up to four rail systems.

“We have planned our intermodal facility in a central location to service both the north and future south terminal, and All Aboard Florida is vying to be the first rail system to operate from it,” said Orlando International Airport Executive Director Phil Brown in a prepared statement.

The future intermodal facility also could accommodate the SunRail commuter-rail system, which currently is under construction. The system will connect four Orlando-area counties and includes a future connection to the airport. In addition, the airport plans to build an automated people mover that would provide passengers direct access from the North Terminal to a future expansion area, including aircraft gates to the south.
