High-speed rail a top option for short-haul European travel, study says

Eurostar, the high-speed rail service linking the United Kingdom with other European countries, recently commissioned an independent study to determine how likely people were to choose high-speed rail for short-haul travel.
About 84 percent of respondents said they would “definitely” or “probably” choose high-speed rail over air travel when they are planning their next trip to Europe. Forty-three percent said they would be happy to travel by train for up to six hours.
Since air travel was disrupted last week due to the eruption of the Icelandic volcano, Eurostar has run an additional 63 trains and carried more than half a million passengers — 100,000 more than were scheduled to travel on the line.
