The U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded $71.3 million to the state of Indiana to complete a project designed to help alleviate congestion in one of the region's most delay-prone rail corridors, according to a press release.

The Indiana Gateway project calls for upgrading 29.3 miles of track between Porter, Ind., and the Indiana/Illinois state line. The track is owned by Norfolk Southern Railway. The improvements include track reconfiguration work and track and signal upgrades, which will help support the development of higher-performing intercity passenger-rail service in the Midwest.

More than 90 freight and 14 Amtrak trains operate over the tracks daily.
