Today, Knorr-Bremse Group announced it obtained a $746 million contract — its largest ever, according to the company — to provide braking and door systems for 2,720 cars that will make up the CRH3 high-speed trains being built for the Chinese Ministry of Railways. The firm also will equip 1,280 of those cars with air conditioning systems.
Knorr-Bremse will supply the initial units in the fourth quarter and continue deliveries until 2012.
The CRH3 trains are being built by Chinese manufacturers Tangshan Locomotive & Rolling Stock Works and Changchun Railway Vehicles Co. They will operate at speeds up to 220 mph on routes between Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, and along other major high-speed rail corridors under construction in China.
