The U.S. Department of Transportation will provide nearly $17 million toward a $45 million project aimed at renovating Union Station in Springfield, Mass., the department announced Monday.

The project calls for restoring the terminal building, adding retail and office space, installing a transportation conference center, removing the baggage building and constructing a 23-bay bus terminal, constructing a two-level parking garage, and reopening a passenger tunnel that connects the terminal building with the Amtrak station and platforms.

In addition to Amtrak and local bus service, the rehabilitated station will be used by trains operating on the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield rail line, which currently is being upgraded to accommodate 110-mph trains.

Station construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2013.
