More details on Amtrak's HSR grant award

On Monday, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced it redirected $450 million in High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail funds initially intended for Florida to Amtrak to upgrade a portion of the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak since has issued its own press release that provides further details on how that money will be spent.

The railroad plans to upgrade electrical power and signal systems, track and overhead catenary wires between Morrisville, Pa., and New Brunswick, N.J. — one of the busiest segments of the Northeast Corridor where the densest concentration of Acela Express trains operate, according to a prepared statement. Amtrak also will reconfigure track switches at the western entrance to Penn Station to help mitigate congestion issues.
