On July 30, Russian Railways plans to begin Sapsan high-speed train service on the Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod line. Produced by Siemens Transportation Systems, the Sapsan is a Velaro RUS series high-speed electric train capable of traveling up to 250 kilometers per hour (155 mph).

To enable high-speed service, Russian Railways spent $9.49 billion rubles (or about $306.2 million) during the past four years to reconstruct the line. The railway, according to a prepared statement, "developed tracks" at 17 stations; laid about 33 kilometers of main and station tracks; "modernized" electric signal boxes that operate 269 track switches; rebuilt 27 "artificial structures"; reinstalled 139 kilometers of overhead lines; reconstructed 11 crossings and installed new signal boxes; and installed barriers along 331 line kilometers.
