Siemens Mobility has taken steps to expand its U.S. manufacturing plant to meet future demand for high-speed trains and infrastructure.
Siemens recently completed the purchase of 20 acres of land adjacent to its existing 34-acre light-rail vehicle manufacturing facility in Sacramento. The company also is expanding its solar energy system, doubling the capacity to two full megawatts to meet nearly all of the factory’s current power needs and a portion required to manufacture high-speed trains.
The supplier manufactures a line of trains — currently operating in Germany, China, Russia and Spain — that operate at speeds up to 220 mph. The trains would be a match for high-speed systems proposed in California and Florida, Siemens said. The company also makes a line of trains that operate between 110 mph and 125 mph, which would fit the requirements of other proposed systems, such as in the Midwest, according to a press release.
