Spanish National Railway RENFE recently awarded a $1.3 billion contract to an ALSTOM Transport/CAF consortium to supply and maintain 30 shuttle and 45 variable gauge high-speed trains.

ALSTOM’s $768 million portion of the contract includes supplying the shuttle trains, and providing mechanical construction, electric equipment and maintenance for the variable gauge trains.

Reaching top speeds of 155 mph, the shuttle trains will be used for RENFE’s intercity shuttle service; the variable gauge trains, for the railway’s regional service.

Trains will be manufactured and assembled at ALSTOM’s Santa Perpetua, Spain, plant, and CAF’s Beasain and Zaragoza, Spain, plants.

The shuttle trains are scheduled to be delivered between October 2006 and January 2008; the variable gauge trains, between October 2006 and May 2009.
