The Spanish ministry and Spanish National Railways (Renfe) recently approved Siemens Transportation Systems’ Velaro E high-speed trains for service. The trains will be the first German high-speed train to operate on a rail line in Spain.

The trains will travel at speeds up to 217 mph. Last year, the Velaro E set a new world record speed for series-production trains at 250 mph during a test run between Madrid and Barcelona, according to a prepared statement.

Under a $1.3 billion contract, Siemens is providing 26 Velaro E trains to Renfe. So far, 18 have been delivered.

The Velaro E predecessor, the ICE 3, has been operating in Germany since 2000.
