Rail News: High-Speed Rail

Spanish railway's new high-speed trains include Timken tapered roller bearings

A Talgo Inc./Bombardier Transportation consortium recently delivered the first four of 16 high-speed trains to Spanish railway RENFE.

The trains include up to 12 pressurized coaches pulled by twin electric-power cars on each end. The coaches and power cars include The Timken Co.’s AP-2™ tapered roller bearings, which feature low-torque hydrodynamic labyrinth (HDL™) seals designed to reduce heat generation. The vehicles use the same bearing module in a naturally tilting design, enabling two coaches to share a single bogie.

Equipped with bogies fitting independent axles, the coach cars feature permanently steered wheels and Talgo’s pneumatic suspension, enabling coaches to tilt around curves. The power cars are designed to handle pressure waves and lateral winds.
