Union Pacific, Illinois DOT to launch last leg of major construction on Chicago-St. Louis route
advertisement
This weekend, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and Union Pacific Railroad will begin the final phase of 2012 upgrades to the Chicago-St. Louis high-speed rail project.
UP will continue upgrading tracks to enable Amtrak Lincoln Service trains to travel at speeds up to 110 mph. Trains currently can reach top speeds of 79 mph.
This is the last scheduled year of large-scale construction. In September, Amtrak and IDOT plan to preview higher-speed trains between Dwight and Pontiac. In the future, IDOT hopes to add a second main track along the entire corridor; however, the agency does not currently have funds to conduct the work.
