Virginia-North Carolina Interstate High-Speed Rail Compact meeting set for July 12
Today, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced the inaugural meeting of the Virginia-North Carolina High Speed Rail Compact will be held on July 12, 2010, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. The meeting will be held in Room 150 at NCDOT headquarters, 1 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh, N.C.
At the meeting, Compact members will be sworn in; they’ll also elect officers and adopt procedures to conduct business. The meeting also provides an opportunity for members to “discuss strategies to advance multi-state high-speed rail initiatives,” according to a prepared statement. The primary multi-state high speed rail initiative in question: the Southeast High Speed Rail Project. Public comments currently are being accepted on the Tier II Environmental Impact Statement for this initiative at www.sehsr.org.
The Virginia-North Carolina High Speed Rail Compact was authorized by Congress and established through legislation enacted by the Virginia and North Carolina general assemblies.
