The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DPRT) will host a public meeting Jan. 7 at the Virginia State Capitol Building in Richmond to discuss the Virginia-North Carolina High-Speed Rail Compact.

The compact was authorized by Congress and established through legislation enacted by the Virginia and North Carolina general assemblies.

The compact's purpose is to examine and discuss strategies to advance multi-state high-speed rail initiatives, DPRT officials said in a press release. The primary multi-state high-speed rail initiative under way today between Virginia and North Carolina is a development of the Southeast High Speed Rail Project, a proposed high-speed corridor between Washington, D.C., and Charlotte, N.C.

At the meeting, transportation department officials will provide updates on the project and studies under way in Virginia and North Carolina.
