A public meeting to review revisions to proposed work in Chesterfield County, Va., that's part of the Southeast High Speed Rail (SEHSR) project will be held Feb. 26 at the county's Public Safety Training Center.

The meeting's purpose is to inform the public about revisions to proposed bridges and underpasses, grade crossing closures and other work related to the SEHSR project in the county, Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) officials said in a prepared statement.

Revisions were developed throughout the corridor in response to public comments obtained at hearings held in 2010 on the Tier II Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the SEHSR's Richmond, Va.-to-Raleigh, N.C., route. The project would establish higher-performance rail on about 162 miles of track as part of an overall plan to extend higher-speed rail service from Boston to Washington, D.C., south through Richmond to Charlotte, N.C.

In May 2012, the DRPT and North Carolina Department of Transportation Rail Division submitted a Tier II EIS recommendation report to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). The report identifies the two states' recommendations to the FRA for the preferred rail alternative for each of the 26 sections of the SEHSR corridor between Richmond and Raleigh.

In Chesterfield County, all alternatives follow the same alignment on the existing right of way. The preferred alternatives and associated rail work will be presented in the Tier II Final EIS, which is expected to be published in early 2014, DRPT officials said.

That will be followed by the FRA's record of decision and a second round of public hearings.
