Canadian National Railway Co., the Port of Prince Rupert and Maher Terminals of Canada Corp. have lined up a second weekly steamship vessel to use the northern British Columbia port.

A COSCO/K-Line/Yang Ming/Hanjin alliance now will now ship cargo from Hong Kong and China to North America via the port. COSCO launched an initial weekly port call to Prince Rupert in October 2007. CN, the port and Maher Terminals partnered to build an intermodal terminal and distribution center in Prince Rupert last year.

"We have created a new, highly competitive gateway for goods entering North America and transiting CN's network to the U.S. Midwest and central Canada," said CN Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing James Foote in a prepared statement. "With the growth in imports over Rupert, we continue to identify new opportunities for backhaul container movements to Asia from the continental interior, including the U.S. Midwest and western Canada."

Container traffic from the second vessel call at Prince Rupert is consistent with the Class I's expectations for the port's operations and is included in the operating plan for implementing the proposed acquisition of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway Co.'s principal lines, CN said.
