Tranz Rail, Auckland port team up to operate railroad's container business

Tranz Rail Holdings Ltd. and the Port of Tauranga Ltd. recently formed MetroBox Auckland Ltd., a joint venture company that plans to purchase and operate Tranz Rail's container storage and repair business, formerly known as Auckland Box.

Tranz Rail and the port plan to relocate MetroBox to an eight-acre site adjacent to the port to enable inland port operator METROPORT to expand, and separate truck and rail operations to improve both modes' loading and turnaround times.

The relocation also will enable METROPORT to reduce container stacking heights, making equipment more accessible for loading. Tranz Rail plans to install two lifts at MetroBox's new container yard to increase operating efficiency.

MetroBox expects to increase Auckland Box's empty container storage, handling, cleaning, washing and repairing business. The railroad and port named Tranz Rail Manager of Container Services Sean McElroy to head MetroBox.

Tranz Rail and the port plan to spend $3 million to develop a site on METROPORT's southern end. Tranz Rail will provide MetroBox a long-term lease for Auckland Box's existing site.
