On Nov. 4, Norfolk Southern Railway and Union Pacific Railroad began offering enhanced Blue Streak service between Atlanta and Los Angeles.

The Class Is moved up the Tuesday cutoff time on eastbound LA trains to 1 p.m., enabling "Superflyer" freight arriving in Atlanta to be available Thursday evening, and "Premium" and "Standard" loads to be available Friday morning.

"We hope this faster day of service further opens up opportunities for truck to rail conversion," said NS and UP officials in a prepared statement.

In fall 2001, UP and NS launched Blue Streak, a joint expedited intermodal service between several major markets in the western and northeastern United States. Blue Streak features three service levels: Standard, providing price-sensitive customers access to Blue Streak trains, subject to availability; Premium, offering priority train space, freight monitoring and improved cut-off and availability times; and SuperFlyer, featuring guaranteed equipment availability and on-time delivery.
