Seattle port joins voluntary environmental stewardship program

The Port of Seattle recently became a participant in Green Marine, a voluntary environmental program for the North American maritime industry. The Seattle facility becomes the first U.S. port outside of the Great Lakes region to join the program, port officials said in a press release.

Green Marine targets nine key environmental issues involving air emissions, community impacts and environmental leadership. The program — which currently counts more than 70 U.S. and Canadian ship owners, port authorities, terminals and shipyards as members — encourages participants to reduce their overall environmental footprint.

The Port of Seattle is working with Port Metro Vancouver and the Port of Tacoma to address port-related contributions to air quality and climate change in the Puget Sound area via the Northwest Port's Clean Air Strategy. The Seattle port — which operates four container terminals — also set 25-year environmental goals in 2011 that call for reducing air emissions by 50 percent from 2005 levels.

"Green Marine's goal of continuous improvement is also at the core of our commitment towards sustainability", said Port of Seattle Chief Executive Officer Tay Yoshitani.
