Port Saint John posted a record-breaking first quarter, when the New Brunswick, Canada, facility logged significant increases in four cargo categories.

Container volume soared 52 percent to 16,645 20-foot equivalent units; container tonnage pumped up 72 percent to 110,128; forest products cargo jumped 32 percent as wood pulp tonnage leaped 71 percent to 22,517; and potash volume skyrocketed 141 percent to a record 277,249 tons compared with first-quarter 2012 levels.

"As we move into the second quarter, we are pleased that our partners are experiencing cargo gains in many sectors of our business," said Port Saint John President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Quinn in a press release.

Eastern Canada's largest port, Port Saint John is served by the New Brunswick Southern Railway, which interchanges with CN in Saint John. The short line also interchanges directly or indirectly with Canadian Pacific, CSX Corp., Norfolk Southern Railway, Pan Am Railways and the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway Inc.
