Union Pacific Railroad is digging a bit deeper into the Mexican intermodal market by offering a new joint service designed to divert more north/south truck traffic.

On Dec. 3, UP announced it's now providing an expedited, all-rail intermodal service with Ferrocarril Mexicano S.A. de C.V. (Ferromex) featuring seven-day transit time between Los Angeles and Mexican industrial centers Guadalajara and Mexico City.

The ramp-to-ramp service includes "TransBorder," which is designed to provide expedited, seamless Mexico-to-United States transit by clearing customs within Mexico and bypassing border customs. TransBorder also enables shippers to trace cars in the United States and Mexico, and obtain Equipment Management Program (EMP) 48- and 53-foot containers through around-the-clock reservations (Ferromex now is an EMP member).

Union Pacific will interchange with Ferromex over the El Paso, Texas /Ciudad Juárez, Mexico gateway. The railroads expect soon to add U.S. and Mexican origins/destinations to the service.

The railroads plan to provide northbound and southbound service six days and five days a week, respectively, moving mostly mixed freight, including consumer and manufactured goods.
