Subaru to import vehicles from Georgia port

Subaru recently announced plans to begin importing five of its models through the Port of Brunswick.

The port will become the Japanese automaker’s gateway into the southeastern United States and will serve two zones in its national distribution network, covering an area from North Carolina to Florida. Subaru plans to move 15,000 vehicles through the port annually, with shipments beginning in mid-July.

Subaru was attracted to the port in part because of a terminal that offers expedited rail delivery to such major population centers as Atlanta; Birmingham, Ala.; Charlotte, N.C.; Memphis, Tenn.; and Orlando, Fla. The port is served by the Golden Isles Terminal Railroad, a Genesee & Wyoming Inc.-owned switching railroad that interchanges with CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Railway.

"It is significant that Brunswick is Subaru's first port of entry in the Southeastern U.S.," said Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Curtis Foltz in a prepared statement. "The efficiency of service from the GPA and our partners in auto processing, as well as Brunswick's speed to important markets, makes Georgia the smart choice for roll-on/roll-off cargo."
