Alabama port authority to purchase two parcels for intermodal expansion needs

The Alabama State Port Authority’s (ASPA) board earlier this month authorized Chief Executive Officer James Lyons to acquire two industrial tracts adjacent to the authority’s Choctaw Point Complex at the Port of Mobile.

A 35.3-acre tract to be acquired along the port’s federal shipping channel near APM Terminals Mobile would provide expansion opportunities for the authority’s rapidly growing container terminal, ASPA officials said in a press release.

The authority also is interested in purchasing a 63-acre tract along Interstate 10 that's adjacent to ASPA's Intermodal Logistics Park. The parcel would provide additional lands for container and intermodal rail facilities at Choctaw Point, ASPA officials said.

About 95 acres at the park now are available for warehousing, distribution and light manufacturing applications. The Choctaw Point Complex includes APM Terminals Mobile, the park and an intermodal container transfer facility.

"Both of these properties are strategic to [our] long-range growth by providing expansion opportunities for the port’s intermodal investments," said Lyons.

The authority owns and operates the port and Choctaw Point Complex, which have access to two interstates and five Class Is.
