The Port of Quincy announced yesterday a request for $16.2 million in transportation funds from the Washington State Legislature. The port would use the funds to expand infrastructure at its intermodal terminal in the hopes of meeting the needs of various shippers throughout the region. The request, dubbed the Port of Quincy Intermodal Terminal Infrastructure Expansion Project, would create three additional intermodal tracks and a longer siding track to help meet the needs of BNSF Railway Co. and reduce congestion on the Great Northern Corridor Rail Line, according to a press release issued by the port. The project also calls for creating more surface area for additional container storage and constructing a bridge across the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation West Canal.
Expanding the terminal's infrastructure would enable the port to bring-in an intermodal operator to again begin shipping Washington State fresh produce, frozen foods and other perishable goods, and meet BNSF's unit-train requirements, port officials said. The funding request has received support from various shippers and organizations, including the newly-formed Great Northern Corridor Coalition, they said.
