Canada OKs funds for Montreal port's rail bridge, truck project

Transport Canada yesterday announced CA$18.5 million in federal dollars will be awarded to a project to increase efficiency, capacity and security at the Port of Montreal.

The project includes building a rail bridge outside the truck entrance to improve truck traffic at the port, Transport Canada officials said in a press release.

In addition, the project consists of
•  an information technology system for truck logistics that will enable drivers to register for access to the port's terminals, thus improving traffic flow;
• deploying electronic signs on port land that will feature real-time information for truck drivers; and
• deploying an intelligent communications network to reduce truck traffic in the port's vicinity.

“Our government is investing in the Port of Montreal’s physical and digital infrastructure to stimulate economic growth, create quality middle-class jobs, and ensure that Canada’s transportation networks remain competitive and efficient," said Canada's Transport Minister Marc Garneau. "The investment at the Port will also help reduce congestion and truck traffic in and around its various terminals.”
