Rail Model Group Minot (RMG) will serve as the operator for North Dakota's new intermodal rail service, the Minot Area Development Corp. announced earlier this week.
BNSF Railway Co. will serve the new intermodal facility in Minot.
RMG has developed a network of privately operated intermodal facilities providing services to inland containerized export shippers. In cooperation with BNSF, RMG operates two other intermodal ramps located in Fremont, Nebraska, and Amarillo, Texas.
"Our partnership with BNSF continues to grow with this opportunity to develop solutions for Minot," said RMG President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Oberting in a press release.
The Minot facility comes after North Dakota officials worked for two decades to locate an intermodal facility in the state in an effort to reduce shipping costs for agricultural producers and other industries.
"Rail transportation has always been integral to the Minot and state economies, and this new intermodal facility expands rail service even further," said Amy McBeth, BNSF assistant vice president of public affairs.
Minot is the location for the only BNSF Certified Site in North Dakota, McBeth noted. The designation identifies rail-served industrial sites that have met readiness standards intended to reduce development time and risk for companies seeking rail-served locations.
The RMG Minot facility will provide service to the Northwest Seaport Alliance with on-dock trains to terminals in Seattle and Tacoma, Washington.
"This new rail service means lower costs for our export customers in the Great Plains shipping valuable agricultural commodities through our gateway," said Peter Steinbrueck, Port of Seattle commission president and co-chair of the Northwest Seaport Alliance.
