Three giant cranes are on their way for use at the Oakland International Container Terminal at the Port of Oakland in California, port officials announced late last week.
Stevedoring Services of America (SSA) is investing in the giant cranes from Shanghai-based ZPMC, which will be among the tallest at the port. SSA operates 10 cranes at the terminal.
"Taller cranes are needed for efficiently handling cargo that arrives on ultra-large container ships," said SSA Containers President Edward DeNike in a press release. "This new infrastructure is a commitment to the port that we will continue our maritime business at Oakland well into the future."
SSA's investment in the cranes is valued at $30 million, port officials said. The cranes are expected to arrive at the terminal sometime this week.
BNSF Railway Co. and Union Pacific Railroad serve the port.
