The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) logged another record-breaking month for port activity in May.
Total volume and the number of imports and autos registered double-digit increases compared with May 2020 levels, while rail volume shot up 22.8% to 62,026 containers, setting a new May record.
From January through May 2021, rail volume increased 8.8% compared with the same 2020 period.
The number of autos handled by the port in May skyrocketed 88.7% to 41,308. Auto volume through 2021's first five months jumped 25% year over year, according to a PANYNJ press release.
Total May volume reached 796,693 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) versus 537,412 TEUs in May 2020, up 48.2%. Through May, the port had logged 3,645,672 TEUs. The port now has set volume records in 10 straight months.
