The Alabama Port Authority (APA) last week announced the $2 million purchase of 272 acres to build a new inland intermodal container transfer facility (ICTF) in Montgomery.
The project will extend intermodal rail service from APA's existing ICTF at the Port of Mobile to support regional growth in manufacturing and distribution, APA officials said in a press release.
When completed, the ICTF will be served by CSX, which formerly conducted regularly scheduled intermodal services at the port. The Class I is expected to contribute up to $12.5 million for infrastructure improvements.
"This is another great example of how successful partnerships can help foster creative solutions for CSX customers," said Tom Tisa, head of business development for CSX. "These infrastructure investments will provide the opportunity to grow our business in the region."
Phase I will cost about $54 million and could take up to two years to complete. The new facility will also enhance public and private investments elsewhere in the state, including the South Alabama Mega Site where CSX is investing $6 million into rail-spur infrastructure to accommodate large manufacturers.
