The Port of Virginia announced this week it set a new cargo volume record in May at more than 340,000 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
May was the most productive month in the port's history, surpassing the previous all-time monthly mark set in December 2021 by more than 14,500 units. May was also the third consecutive month in which cargo volume exceeded 314,000 TEUs.
The combined volume of March, April and May 2022 represent 978,000 TEUs, the busiest three-month stretch ever for the port, Virginia Port Authority officials said in a press release.
The port's new record is an 8% increase over May 2021's cargo volume. The port also processed 188,869 total containers last month, a 7.3% increase over the same period last year. General cargo tonnage rose 6.2% year over year. However, total rail containers dipped 3.5% over the past month; year-to-date, rail container volume is up 12.6%.
The port is expecting strong volumes this month that will position the Port of Virginia to have its best fiscal year yet, which ends June 30. Fifteen new shuttle trucks and two new ship-to-shore cranes are being placed into service at Norfolk International Terminals' South Berth, an important contributor to the expected volumes, said VPA Executive Director and CEO Stephen Edwards.
"These new cranes will provide the capacity to process about 360,000 additional TEUs annually, which is going to be important for us as we continue to see new business and move into peak cargo season," Edwards said.
