Total intermodal volume in second-quarter 2022 fell 4.3% to 4,630,400 units compared with the same period a year ago, according to the Intermodal Association of North America's latest quarterly report.

Domestic container volume rose 4% to 2,098,606 units, while the international container count fell 8.4% to 2,301,617 units. The number of trailers tumbled 25.2% to 230,177 units.

"Despite this quarter's losses, it was an improved picture relative to the first quarter," said IANA President and CEO Joni Casey in a press release. "Q2 volumes exceeded Q1 by 7.4%."

The seven highest-density trade corridors — which collectively handled more than 60% of total volume — all posted declines in Q2. The Midwest-Northwest corridor led the pack at 20.1% followed by the South Central-Southwest corridor at 14.5%.

Volume in the Intra-Southeast, Southeast-Southwest and Midwest-Southwest corridors dropped 7.8%, 5.5% and 5.3%, respectively. The Northeast-Midwest corridor registered a 3.1% decrease and the Trans-Canada corridor logged a 2.2% decline.
