Schneider yesterday announced it has completed the transition of its western rail operations to Union Pacific Railroad.
The move makes Schneider the largest company driver dray fleet on the rail network, Schneider officials said in a press release. Schneider's intermodal operations on UP transitioned "seamlessly" as the two companies collaborated over the past year to align operations, technology, sales and customer teams in preparation for the service change, they added.
BNSF Railway Co. served as Schneider's primary western rail carrier for 30 years, but the Class I's contract with the trucking and intermodal services company expired at 2022's end.
There was no disruption to customers during the transition to UP, Schneider officials said.
Schneider and UP are working to improve driver efficiency at terminals and reduce delays in transit.
"This is the beginning of a partnership built on a shared commitment to provide more sustainable intermodal services and reduce our carbon footprints," said UP Executive Vice President of Marketing and Sales Kenny Rocker.
Working with UP provides a reduction in idling time and increased route optimization that leads to a reduction in vehicle emissions, Schneider officials said. Additionally, Schneider announced in 2022 that it would add 92 battery-electric vehicles to its intermodal operations in Southern California.
