The ports of Virginia and Houston this week announced they logged record cargo volumes in 2022.
The Port of Virginia processed more than 3.7 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2022, up 5.1% compared with 2021 volumes. The port also logged three of its top four months in all-time container volume during the year, with volumes peaking in May at an all-time high of 341,611 TEUs, Virginia port officials said in a press release.
Rail containers increased 5.8% to 679,838 units, while total containers increased 4.9% to 2,044,043 units. The port also recorded a 6.6% increase in total breakbulk tonnage to 157,385 units.
The Port of Virginia is served by CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway.
Meanwhile, Port Houston logged nearly 4 million TEUs in 2022, up 14% from the previous year, Houston port officials said in a press release.
Houston reported "consistent double-digit growth" at the Bayport and Barbours Cut container terminals between January and November 2022, though volumes dipped 12% in December, Houston port officials said. Despite that, it was the port's top December ever for loaded container exports, which increased 7% year over year.
Port Houston is served by the Port Terminal Railroad Association, which is controlled by the port authority, Houston Belt & Terminal Railway Co., BNSF Railway Co., Kansas City Southern and Union Pacific Railroad.
