Port of Halifax officials announced last week that the Nova Scotia port in 2022 crossed the 600,000 20-foot-equivalent unit (TEU) throughput threshold for the first time.
Halifax Port Authority officials attributed the milestone to the collective efforts of rail-service provider CN, container terminal operator PSA Halifax and the International Longshoremen’s Association, which represents port workers. A total of 601,700 TEUs moved through the port’s containerized cargo terminals, PSA Halifax Atlantic Hub and PSA Halifax Fairview Cove, port authority officials said in a press release.
"In 2022, we started using the Joint Operation Center for containerized cargo operations and that certainly helped find new efficiencies and maintain cargo fluidity with no vessel berthing delays during a second year of sustained supply-chain disruptions," said Allan Gray, the port authority’s president and CEO.
Said CN Vice President of Intermodal Dan Bresolin: "Through strong collaboration with PSA, the Halifax Port Authority, CN and our mutual customers, there are many more opportunities that lie ahead to further grow the Halifax gateway."
This year, port officials are preparing for the arrival of two additional super post-Panamax cranes at PSA Halifax Atlantic Hub and new yard handling equipment, and the continuation of several infrastructure projects designed to increase yard-handling space and improve efficiency and sustainability.
