The Port of Savannah now handles one of every 8.8 loaded 20-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) in the United States, the highest national market share rate the port has ever recorded, according to the Georgia Ports Authority.
The port moved more than 2 million TEUs, or 11.4% of U.S. loaded international containers, in fiscal-year 2023, GPA officials said in a press release.
Additionally, the port handled 12.3% of U.S. container exports between July and December 2022, up 0.4% compared with exports during the same period in 2021, GPA officials said.
In February, the port logged nearly 395,000 TEUs — its second-busiest February on record. February 2022 remains the busiest at 460,400 TEUs.
The authority's inland port at Brunswick logged an 18.5% increase last month to 52,720 units of roll-on/roll-off cargo, GPA officials said. The port mainly processes trade-in autos and heavy machinery.
CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway serve the port.
