Total North American intermodal volume plummeted 8.6% to 3.9 million containers and trailers in first-quarter 2023 compared with volumes in the same period a year ago, according to the Intermodal Association of North America.
All segments showed declines in Q1 2023: The number of domestic containers fell 5.8% to 1.9 million; international containers dropped 8.8% to 1.8 million; and trailers plunged 28.8% to 191,941.
"Falling consumer demand for goods and related import declines have impacted intermodal volumes," said IANA CEO Joni Casey in a press release. "Conversely, network fluidity and equipment availability continue to recover, so we are well positioned for growth over the ensuing months."
The seven highest-density trade corridors — which collectively handled more than 60% of total volume — were all down in Q1. The South-Central to Southwest was down 19.2%; Southeast-Southwest, down 16%; Midwest-Southwest, down 9.2%; Midwest-Northwest, down 7.8%; Northeast-Midwest, down 7.8%; intra-Southeast, down 5.4%; and trans-Canada, down 1.2%.
