Port of Montreal officials yesterday announced updated steps they plan to take to reduce the impacts of climate change.
The objectives include a reduction of Scope 1, 2 and 3 absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through rail operations, building management, infrastructure works and vehicle fleet by 55% by 2030, leading to carbon neutrality by 2035; and a reduction of Scope 3 absolute GHG emissions generated by logistics companies on port territory by 40% by 2040, leading to carbon neutrality by 2050, Montreal Port Authority (MPA) officials said in a press release.
To achieve those goals, the port will implement the adoption of new energy practices or scale up existing ones, they added.
Also, 30% of the territories under the port authority's management will be protected as a national wildlife area. As part of a CA$10 million investment, MPA will roll out greening projects, including a commitment to plant 3,000 trees over five years.
