The Canadian government last week announced the award of CA$12.5 million to the Essex Terminal Railway Co. for a cargo terminal infrastructure expansion project at Port Windsor in Ontario.
The project involves the construction of a warehouse and expansion of the port’s shorewall as part of a plan to shift the transportation of goods from trucks to trains and ships. The funding was awarded through the National Trade Corridors Fund.
When completed, the project will reduce pollution and congestion along the Highway 401 corridor; make it easier to move steel and aluminum products; prevent shoreline erosion; and reduce risk of flooding due to rising lake water levels caused by climate change, Transport Canada officials said in a press release
In addition, the project will enable the possibility of building a cargo dock that could be used for other purposes, they said.
A short line, the Essex Terminal Railway runs from the east side of Windsor, through the town of LaSalle and terminates in Amherstburg, Ontario.
