The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) announced yesterday it achieved record roll-on/roll-off (ro/ro) cargo volumes in fiscal-year 2023.
The authority — which oversees the ports of Savannah and Brunswick and inland terminals in Chatsworth, Bainbridge and Columbus — reported more than 723,500 ro/ro units during the year, up 18% from FY22. Ro/ro imports jumped 24%; exports increased 7%, GPA officials said in a press release.
GPA added Nissan as a Port of Brunswick customer during the fiscal year, contributing to the higher ro/ro volumes. Colonel's Island Terminal now handles Nissan imports from Japan and Mexico. Additionally at Brunswick, the port authority is creating 640,000 square feet of new processing space across five buildings and 122 acres of additional auto storage, increasing ro/ro capacity to 1.4 million vehicles annually.
Recently, GPA received federal approval to construct a fourth ro/ro berth at Colonel's Island; the project is in the engineering phase.
In FY23, GPA ports handled 5.4 million 20-foot equivalent units, down 6.7% compared with FY22's volumes. Appalachian Regional Port logged a record 33,700 rail lifts during the year, a more than 18% increase.
The Port of Savannah achieved 11.2% market share in container trade among U.S. East, West and Gulf Coast ports through April, its highest-ever market share, GPA officials said.
