Total intermodal volume in second-quarter 2023 tumbled 10.4% to 4.1 million units compared with the same period a year ago, according to the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA).
All segments of intermodal traffic declined: Domestic containers by 6.3% (to 1.97 million units); international containers, 13.2% (to just under 2 million units); and trailers, 20.1% (to 183,935 units).
"Slower year-over-year demand for goods and a competitive freight environment have taken its toll for a second quarter," said IANA President and CEO Joni Casey in a press release. "On the other hand, the numbers suggest a later peak this year and an improved picture for the second half of 2023."
The seven highest-density trade corridors — which collectively handled more than 60% of total volume — were all down in Q2. Volume in the Southeast-Southwest dropped 18.3%, followed by the South Central-Southwest at 13.%, Southwest at 12.9% and Trans-Canada at 10.5%. Volume fell 9.1% in the Midwest-Northwest, 7.6% in the Midwest and 7.1% in the Intra-Southeast.
