The Montreal Port Authority (MPA) last week completed a project designed to optimize rail capacity by improving the performance and fluidity of its logistics services.

Phased in over three years at a total cost of CA$62.4 million, the project — which extends from Bourbonniere Avenue to Panet Street near the Jacques-Cartier Bridge — signals a major increase in the Port of Montreal's rail capacity, according to an MPA news release.

The project included the installation of two new tracks and six switches to serve the port's 14 terminals, the construction of retaining walls and the relocation of Port Road and all related infrastructure.

The Canadian government provided CA$18.4 million and the Quebec government, CA$18.3 million for the project.

About 45% of the port's cargo is carried by rail at a rate of 60 to 80 trains per week.
