During the week ending July 13, U.S. railroads moved 483,806 carloads and intermodal units, up 1.3% year over year, according to Association of American Railroads (AAR) data.
Carloads fell 4.3% to 215,400 units but intermodal volume rose 6.3% to 268,406 units.
Five of the 10 carload commodity groups tracked by the AAR each week posted a year-over-year gain. They included grain (up 5,557 units), farm products excluding grain and food (up 736 units) and forest products (up 427 units). Commodity groups that posted declines included coal, nonmetallic minerals and motor vehicles and parts.
For the week, Canadian railroads reported 86,936 carloads, down 0.2%, and 68,356 intermodal units, up 37.7%. Mexican railroads reported 15,729 carloads, down 15.7%, and 12,317 intermodal units, down 3.2%.
Through 2024’s first 28 weeks, U.S. railroads’ cumulative volume of 13,118,107 carloads and intermodal units increased 2.2% compared with the same 2023 period. Canadian and Mexican railroads’ cumulative volume of 4,499,547 units and 830,621 units rose 2% and 6.3%, respectively.
Through 28 weeks, North American rail volume for 10 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads totaled 18,448,275 carloads and intermodal units, up 2.4% year over year.
