Schneider National Inc. has partnered with two Class Is and one industrial/logistics complex to create an intermodal service between the Ohio Valley and Kansas City, Mo. On June 5, the trucking and logistics firm will begin offering dedicated container service with CSX Intermodal, Kansas City Southern and the Marion Industrial Center in Marion, Ohio.

Schneider National will operate an intermodal ramp, provide drayage, manage dedicated train service between Marion and Kansas City, and offer connecting service to California and the U.S. Southwest. The 200-acre Marion center will provide warehousing, yard and intermodal ramp facilities.

“Customers have been searching for an Ohio-based intermodal service solution,” said Schneider National President of Transportation Scott Arves in a prepared statement.

CSXI and KCS will operate four trains on the 700-mile route, enabling Schneider National to offer departures six days a week in each direction and reduce transit time by one day.

“This solution will provide the additional capacity and the quality service that shippers need while complementing the products we already provide in this market,” said CSXI President Jim Hertwig.

Schneider National plans to expand the service to Dallas and Mexico later this year. The company — which offers TruckRail® and TruckRail Express™ trailer services with BNSF Railway Co. and CSX Transportation, and an OptiModal® container service with Union Pacific Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railway — is considering whether to expand service to the Pacific Northwest as well as provide trailer-on-flat-car service along the Marion-to-K.C. route.
