During the second quarter, intermodal volume rose 5.9 percent compared with second-quarter 2005’s totals, according to the Intermodal Association of North America’s (IANA) quarterly “Intermodal Market Trends & Statistics.”
Intermodal loads of 3.58 million exceeded last year’s peak of 3.56 million loads during fourth-quarter 2005. And on a monthly basis, June’s volume of 1.24 million loads topped last year’s peak of 1.23 million loads reached in October — the first time since IANA began reporting loadings in 1996 that the previous year’s quarterly and monthly highs were topped in the following year’s first half.
During the second quarter, international container volume totaled 2.16 million, up 9.4 percent compared with second-quarter 2005’s 1.97 million total; domestic container volume rose 3.3 percent to 814,659; and domestic equipment volume increased 1 percent to 1.4 million. However, trailer volume of 610,237 decreased 1.9 percent compared with second-quarter 2005’s total.
