On Sept. 8, third-party logistics (3PL) provider TransMex Logistics Inc. announced plans to increase its intermodal service area in the El Paso, Texas-to-Nogales, Mexico gateway.

TransMex negotiated agreements to offer drayage between rail intermodal facilities in El Paso and Phoenix, and soon-to-open Tucson, Ariz., ramps. The service would complement the 3PL's existing Laredo, Texas-based intermodal operation.

"We have been able to offer limited service over El Paso and Nogales in the past, but with the finalization of recent contract negotiations, we are now able to offer drayage of intermodal rail equipment to and from all major Mexican cities in the states of Sinaloa, Sonora, and Chihuahua," said TransMex Vice President of Sales and Marketing Donna Ascencio in a prepared statement.

Later this year, the 3PL also plans to open San Diego and Calexico, Calif., gateways to offer service between southern California rail intermodal ramps and northern Baja.

For the past 10 years, TransMex has served as a divisional carrier for Union Pacific Railroad. The 3PL and UP are exploring opportunities to develop new intermodal services that would enhance and expand current trans-border services, TransMex said.
